Isn’t It Funny?

I think it is. People are getting picky about what they comment on lately. Or so I’ve seen in my travels around the blogophere. If you don’t relate to whatever other people are writing about, you get no comments or recognition whatsoever. Take for example, my last couple posts…

I wrote about my newest adventure in World of Warcraft and I got NO responses. I had to ask for a comment. Well, I didn’t have to but someone asked me to comment on their post so I asked them to comment on mine. But it’s pretty sad, isn’t it. But then a few days later (days people!!), I write about wanting to get a Wii Fit an start working out. I got 5 comments in less then a minute. I find that pretty pathetic. In all actuality, people were skipping over my WoW post and commenting on the posts below it.

Personally, I use StumbleUpon and comment on every blog that pops up. Sometimes I comment on the photos and other crap that happens to grace my screen as well. But I don’t get comments back from some of those people. I thought it was customary to comment, then get a return comment. It’s how the whole “lets find new friends” thing works isn’t it? It used to be anyway. Now, I’m not complaining about not getting comments (as much as I’m a comment whore and all), I’m just pointing out something I’ve been seeing on mine and a few other sites as well, and thought maybe others were thinking the same thing. Could it be that the blogging phenom is over? Except for the established few, that’s how it’s starting to look…

  1. I just discovered your blog and after reading this post, how could I not comment?!?

I have noticed the same thing on quite a few different blogs. I don’t think it means the blogging phenomenon is over, I think it speaks more to the fact that people are reading so many blogs that they are overwhelmed.

After reading your post, I’m going to make a point to comment more :)

  2. I’ll comment and say hi. I have no clue what the hell World of Warcraft is… it’s a game right? but I’ll say hi anyways. ;)

I have noticed the same thing lately actually. I don’t care too much if blogging is “over” because I try to blog for myself. It’s nice to look back on and read and see things regarding the kids and the rest of the family.

  4. Yep, I’ve always noticed that comment thing, too. And I hate it when people don’t return a visit/comment! Keep on coming and hanging with me and the band. We like to visit and make new friends.

I agree. The blogosphere isn’t what it used to be :/

I don’t mean to skip some posts and I try to comment on everyones. I probably skipped yours as I am not a gamer and I know absolutely nothing about a WII. I read them all, its just that I may not comment on them all. I too have noticed that. Especially if I have a post on something political I get zero comments.

  7. Lissy says:

I always try to return comments, but I don’t want someone commenting on my blog just because they feel like they have to to be nice. Really, if they have no idea what I’m talking about, I don’t mind if they don’t comment back. It happens.

For what it’s worth, I try to comment on things I relate to most. I kinda feel like, if I don’t have anything worthwhile to contribute, I don’t comment just to comment, but hey, that’s me.

really isnt that how people are in person also…We pretty much talk to those that we have something in common with or want to share our story/opinions with.

  10. Personally, I have noticed that people tend to comment less on my more “serious” posts…which are usually the ones I could use some dialogue around!

  11. Caity says:

I try to comment on all the posts in my RSS reader, too. As for World of Warcraft, I honestly tend to skip over those posts. I played the game for over 5 years and was incredibly addicted. I stopped playing it because it really was interfering with my life. Anytime I read WoW posts, I get nostalgic and get the urge to play it again which isn’t healthy. Sorry if I offended you.

I see you got 7 comments so I’m lucky number 8!

I def. agree about commenting. I love receiving comments and so do the same to others! I have to admit I love e-mails even more when they come out of the blue LOL Those make me want to keep on blogging =) Its nice to know someone relates or appreciates what you wrote! Its not that I am insecure but it definitely makes me feel wanted haha Gotta get it wherever I can rite?

Anywho came by way of Berries and Cream- Love Revka!

Take care and if you feel like it leave me a comment on my blog AND follow me on twitter ;) Yes I’m greedy LOL

  13. I always try to return the comment favour – I think its only polite, however I would skip over WoW too as I know nothing about it! BUT if it was the only post then I would attemp to post something witty and understanding that you would probably see right through ;)

I haven’t been around lately, but I’ve always reserved my comments for posts I was interested in. I would hope people would only comment on my site if they were interested in my posts, not just to get a comment back.

I was just talking with Anna yesterday about how blogging has been tainted by paid posts and it’s not what it was anymore (or what it should be). I do miss the time when it was just web designers doing it, not every Tom, Dick and Harry.

I’d say blogging phenom is not yet over. there’s just too many blogs out there competing each other for comments.

  17. Jessica says:

I know exactly what you mean about the comments, but it really does not phase me in the least. I do not get to comment on people’s blogs nearly as often as I would like, which makes me feel as though I am neglecting them.

  18. Denver Engagement Photographer says:

I don’t think the blog thing is over I think that people are just wanting to hear more juicy bits about peoples lifes, than “I woke up and ate a bowl of cereal”. They want information that they can use, or at least get excited to read about. I guess for me blogging is all about my business and creating content that people can look to, and get exposure for my business. I’m definitely not going to be blogging about my daily life anytime soon, because nobody would want to read about it. I guess the days of blogging about more mundane stuff seem to have faded.

  19. Denver Engagement Photographer says:

O and frankly I can’t imagine there would be a large demographic of people that would be female, and be interested in world of warcraft. Unless you’re going to market your blog to that niche I think you would have a hard time finding a bunch of people to read your one off posts on WOW. Just a thought.

  20. Miel says:

Comments are certainly a strange beast. Just remember that most often it is more about your reader than it is about what you right.

For instance, on our blog you can right about anything finance related and you are pretty much guaranteed to get more comments about credit cards than anything else. You’d think people interested in finance would want to move beyond credit cards, but all the focus still seems to be there.

Good luck and keep up the blogging.

    Cheers,

    Miel

    Hi,

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I was returning the favor! I know OF WOW both by Kids (21 & 18) play the thing and so do some of the “older Kids” (men at my work, when will they grow up???) but it is waaaay beyond me.

Just give a controller where I can randomly punch buttons and kill things!

  22. Erik says:

Sorry I have nothing to say about World of Warcraft, but I am enjoying your blog. It doesn’t look as if you are at a loss for comments.

  23. I think that people who once took the time to comment on blogs may be overloaded. There is a LOT more information out there of the stay at home/ work at home genre than there once was. Perhaps it is because the huge number of ladies who have been laid off are blogging to fill their time?

Commenting is not the only watered down element; contests and giveaways are everywhere. Once upon a time you could host a contest like the one I have on my site right now and the entries would be stacked up around your ears before the next day…now not so much.

I don’t know anything about the world of warcraft so I can’t write an opinion, but wanted to comment just to put in my .02.

  24. Marcy says:

Search youtube for “warcraft intervention” to see into how people view the game. There is almost a stigma around it because so many people have got totally hooked. I’m almost afraid to hear about it too much because it make it want to buy it and see what the fuss is about. Ultimately, most people can’t afford to invest that kind of time.

  25. Jenny says:

    Yea, it’s a game :) And hai!

  26. Jenny says:

Well I’m not saying that. Of course we want people to make meaningful comments.

  27. Jenny says:

HAHA It’s ok. No not offended. And yes, it is addicting. I myself am addicted. I get times when I’m so bored with it I just stop playing then I get bored of everything else and start playing again. It’s a vicious circle. ;)

  28. Jenny says:

Well, it keeps my husband from spending money on me in more expensive ways. LOL And he’s happy about that.
